Bladder Cancer

Bladder cancer is rare form of cancer which begins in the cells of the bladder. The bladder stores urine which is a hollow muscular organ. It is a bag like organ which is located in the lower abdomen below the kidneys and right behind the pelvic bone. Empty bladder Shape and size resembles with pear. Normal capacity of bladder is about 400-600ml. Bladder cancer generally affects people who attains age of 55 year or more.

CAUSES 

Generally, it begins in the cells (urothelial cells) which line the inside bladder. In kidneys and the ureters, Urothelial cells are found. It connects the kidneys to the bladder. Urothelial cancer may also develop in the kidneys and ureters. Following are the causes which may increase the chance of development of bladder cancer:

• Cigarette smoke: Persons who smokes have more chance of getting development of this kind of cancer.
• Radiation exposure: Radiation therapy used for cancer treatment may cause development of this kind of cancer.
• Chemotherapy: It may caused by Drugs used for chemotherapy.
• Exposure to certain chemicals: Persons working at certain industry like dyes, rubber, leather, paint, some textiles and hairdressing manufacturing.
• Frequent bladder infections: Frequent bladder infections, bladder stones or other infection in urinary area may increase chance of it.
• Personal or family history of cancer. There is chance of development of bladder cancer if a parent, sibling or child has a history of it.
• Being male. There are more chance of development of bladder cancer in Men are than women.
• Increasing age. It may occur at any age but there are more chances of occurrence after age of 55yers.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Following signs and symptoms of Bladder cancer in affected person may not visible. Or, it is possible that the signs and symptom appeared does not have cancer.

• Changes in blood pressure or blood clots in the urine.
• Pain or burning sensation during urination
• Blood in urine
• Frequent urination
• Throughout night it gives feeling of the need to urinate but not able pass urine.
• Back pain.

Generally, it is  diagnosed after appearance of blood in the urine. it is also possible that blood in the urine cannot be seen and it can only be found in a urine test.

DIAGNOSE OF BLADDER CANCER

In most of the cases bladder cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, which can be treated easily. There is chance of recurrences of early-stage diseases after successful treatment. For this reason, person suffering from bladder cancer after successful treatment require follow-up tests for several years just to ascertain it does not recur.

After suspicion of diseases, doctor may recommend tests to ascertain extent and spread of cancer to lymph nodes only or to other parts of body.

Information collected from tests helps in deciding stage of cancer. Stages of cancer helps in taking decision for treatment. The stages of diseases are categorised from 0 to IV stage. The earlier stages indicate a cancer that’s confined to the inner layers of the bladder and that hasn’t grown to affect the muscular bladder wall.

Stages II to IV signify invasive cancer:

• Cancer has spread to the muscle wall of bladder in Stage II.
• Stage III is second highest stage in which, the cancer has spread to the fatty tissue outside of bladder muscle.
• The highest stage is stage IV an in this stage cancer has spread to lymph nodes or organs in other parts of the body or bones.

TEST FOR DETECTION OF BLADDER CANCER

Following are the tests which helps in detection is as follows:

• Urinalysis: In this case, doctors may carry urinalysis to find out infection.
• Computed tomography (CT) scan: This test helps in diagnosis and determine extent of cancer its spread outside of bladder.
•  Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): In this test a magnet, radio waves and a computer used to take detailed images of bladder for detection of diseases.
• Positron emission tomography (PET)
• Bone scan: It helps in check spread of signs for cancer in bone just like X-RAY.
• Chest X-ray: Chest X-Ray helps to check spread of signs for cancer in lungs.

PREVENTION OF BLADDER CANCER

By following some basic precaution in our day-to-day life, it is possible to prevent bladder cancer. For instance:

• Don’t smoke.Smoking is the main cause of cancer. Hence it is suggested that quit smoking if already smoking and don’t start smoking if not smoking.
• Take caution around chemicals.It is required to follow safety norms and regulations to avoid exposure while working with chemicals.
• Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetable is source of antioxidants, nutrients and fibres. This may help in reduction of chance of cancer.
